DENTAL BRACES (ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT)
Most humans have straight teeth that line up together, but some don’t.
When teeth do not line up, we can say it is crooked. If you have crooked teeth that do not fit together correctly, you probably need to visit us.
Crooked teeth can affect your bite, and over time this will show up glaringly on your face, especially when you smile. We have good news for you. Orthodontic treatment can help straighten your teeth and correct your bite.
What is orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic treatment is a branch of dentistry that treats malocclusion. It covers accurate diagnosis, timely intervention, and mitigation to correct crooked teeth and bad bites by probably including the use of dental braces and headgear.
This treatment is the best way to straighten or move your teeth to improve oral function and appearance. Our dentist is the right person to advise you on what to do.
What is the purpose?
Our dentist will help help you:
Why is this treatment necessary?
The most important reason you should consider consulting our dentist is to enable you to feel comfortable with your dental health. It is harder to clean when teeth are not aligned, resulting in tooth decay. They also strain jaw muscles that can cause jaw, joint problems, shoulder or even back pain, and even temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
Equally important is your appearance. Crowded or crooked teeth, especially when you have teeth sticking out, will give you an unsightly appearance, which will inadvertently affect your confidence level when among relatives, co-workers, and friends.
Timely intervention and mitigating these problems will give you better control over your oral hygiene and personality.
How does this treatment work?
Orthodontic treatment uses appliances to introduce gentle pressure on the teeth and move teeth slowly.
Depending on the severity of your situation, we will either use fixed or removable appliances to rectify the problem.
We will use both fixed and removable functional appliances to correct malocclusion in three planes:
A list of fixed and removable appliances will include:
How am I to know if I need orthodontic treatment?
Check against the list below to see if you have a case, and then call us for consultation.
Am I too old for this treatment?
Once you have enough teeth, you are old enough to start treatment. Generally, treatment usually begins around 12 or 13 years, when the adult teeth have come through and developed fully. On the other hand, a child with a cleft lip and palate may require orthodontic treatment before their adult teeth have developed completely.
Everyone should consult a dental professional on orthodontic care and treatment regardless of age.
Our dentist will determine which orthodontic treatment is right for you. We will use diagnostic tools like clinical examinations, plaster models of your teeth and dental Xrays or CBCT scan. We will develop a treatment plan that works for you with this data.
How long is this treatment?
The length of treatment will depend on the severity of your problem. It could range from several months to about three years.
What about post-treatment care?
Good oral hygiene is essential before or after any orthodontic treatment. When appliances are placed on the teeth, food particles are more likely to become stuck, which will require brushing much more carefully and more often to prevent tooth decay.
Always follow the appointment schedule prepared by our orthodontist. This will prevent your treatment from regressing. Remember, broken appointments will only prolong treatment.
